Thanks to All for Another Great "Pot Luck Dinner" and Looking Forward to the Finger Foods for the April 6th Meeting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well it certainly appears that the Race Season is off to a Great Start with 2 consecutive races with 15 knots or more of wind. Would like to thank "Holmes at Sea" for their support in the Green Bush/O'Kanes Race as the Committee Boat. Outstanding Job!!!!!

Another "FIRST" is coming up for the Club, Saturday, March 27th. After 10 + years we will be participating in a race with the North Florida Cruising Club in their 1st offshore race of the season, from the mouth of the St Johns River to St Mary's River entrance G15. Starting time will be 9 AM, which would mean that boats will be able to be seen off the beaches starting sometime around noon.  At this writing, 5 of our boats have showed interest in participating. They are; Cheese Boat, Gods Gift, Baby Blooz, Mary Wanderer, and Sunday Mornin' Jazz. Seeing that this is the weekend of our "Cruising Overnight Stay & Pot Luck at Cumberland Weekend" it would be special to have some of our boats welcome the racers as they come across the finish line. Just Like the "America's Cup"!!!!

Hope to see you at the finish line, Cumberland Island or at the next meeting.

Fair Winds To All

Seems that I missed a great St. Pat's buffet at our March meeting.  The word is that every morsel was delicious.

There seems to be no further news about the tall ship's visit to Jacksonville in June.  My contact at the ASF has 'given up' on pursuing a contact in Jacksonville and has said that the Maritime Museum is in charge of the event.  I have not yet seen any publicity on the event and we are getting closer to the arrival date of the ships.  If anyone in the club has information, give me a call.

Let's hear it for our Commodore who recently celebrated a 'significant' birthday.  A significant birthday is one in which the last number of the magic day ends in a zero.  Here's to many more, Gene.

See you all at our next meeting.

April cruising is upon us, the season of the most beautiful weather and some awesome bugs. Mar and I are going to jump in and test the waters by taking our annual spring-break pilgrimage north starting April 6th. I have to work Monday or we would start a lot sooner. We plan to return to join the fleet for the great northern circumnavigation scheduled for Easter weekend. The plan is to anchor in Cumberland Friday night (4/9). The fleet will head north cruising off shore to either the entrance at St. Simon’s or even a little more north depending on the weather and sea conditions. We will anchor Sat night. I am still working on some sites and will update later. For those requiring yellow snake, we should be somewhere in vicinity of Golden Isles Marina. Sunday we will return by way of the beautiful ICW making stops along the way at all of the popular spots. Hope to you all on Friday night (4/9/04).

Daytona for the Fourth

I have at present secured tentative reservations for the 6 boats that signed up for the Daytona 4th of July trip. Halifax Harbor needs confirmed reservations ASAP. Please call Pam at 386-671-3600 with credit card info. If you are not going let me know. If you want to go and did not sign up, let me know.

Great race in March!  We had 10 boats turn out for the Greenbush Regatta/O'Kane's St. Patrick Day race.  Nine boats finished within a 30 minute time span!  Our next race is April 17th, the Nassau Sound Buoy Race.  This is an offshore race to "The Lost Buoy" and back.  This race is a lot of fun, a nice day's offshore haul.  Come one, come all, let's race and have a load of fun.  We'll give info pertaining to the Captain's meeting at the April meeting.  See you there!

AMELIA ISLAND SAILING CLUB
March 2, 2004

MINUTES

(Note: My thanks to Lin Bass who taped the meeting and summarized the highlights in my absence.  The minutes will be brief this month as the quality of the recorder used was marginal and most of the meeting was barely audible)

The Commodore called the meeting to order after everyone enjoyed early celebrations of St. Patrick's Day with our Irish food covered dish theme.  He noted the absence of the Vice Commodore and Rear Commodore who is recovering from recent back surgery.  The minutes of January's meeting were present and unanimously accepted by the membership present.

INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS: Visitors were introduced to the membership.  John and Gail Burns will be bringing their Hunter 356 down from Connecticut where, as Joe stated, "there is great cruising for 4 months of the year!".  John and Judy Raczynski, past members were welcomed.  They keep their boat on E dock at the Amelia Island Yacht Basin and Judy would, "like to quite working so much and start sailing".  A warm welcome to John and Colleen who are friends of Lucy Athey.  Welcome to one and all.

GUEST SPEAKER: Roger Henderson introduced quest speaker Mike Owsley, Commander USCGA and a personal friend.  Mike recognized members of the AISC who are also members of the Auxiliary.  His presentation focused on the USCG Auxiliaries mission and what they do specifically in the Fernandina Beach area.  Some issues discussed were how the threat of terrorism is a major concern in our area and how we can be proactive in helping our USCGA to recognize unusual events and report them, what not to do to 'clean up' an oil spill from your vessel, the fact that ICW will be blocked to traffic the first full week of June and other very interesting topics.  The USCGA is always looking for members, if you are interested contact your fellow club members who are members for an application.

VICE COMMODORE: No report.

REAR COMMODORE: No report.

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE: John and Colleen Hodge (sp?) were introduced.  John is a Captain for Lomar Expeditions and Colleen is an accomplished sailor.  Applications for membership are always available at meeting and gladly accepted along with your dues!

TREASURER: Lin announced that there was still an opportunity to purchase 50/50 tickets before the drawing at the meetings end.  She also announced that at present, the club has $1,200. in the coffers.

PROGRAM COMMITTEE: Sorry, tape recorder was not running and no report was captured.

LANDSIDE COMMITTEE: Linda was absent but the theme for our next meeting's covered dish will be an April Fools appetizers.

CRUISE COMMITTEE: Butch discussed in detail the upcoming cruise schedule.  He announced that the club's first 'raft up' will be on March 27th at Cumberland Island.  It will be a 'pot luck' and some boats will be late in arriving due to participation in a race being held the same day.

RACE COMMITTEE: Prior to the race report, Roger announced that he will be making a side trip, of approximately three weeks, to the Abacos in May.  The boat will leave at the end of the first week in May, returning Memorial Day weekend.  If you are interested in joining Roger to cruise along with your boat, get in touch with him.

The first race of the season was deemed 'real freezing butt cold' and quite a windy day but six boats signed on to race.  Five completed the course in the following order: 1st. Cheeseboat, 2nd. Sunday Morning Jazz, 3rd. Baby Blues, 4th. Coy Mistress and 5th. Merry Wanderer.

The next race will be the St. Pat's Race on March 13th.  The back room of O'Kanes has been reserved for a post race celebration from 4 to 6 p.m.  March 27th will be the St. John's to Fernandina Beach and back race.  For more information on this event visit www.sailjaz.com.

NEW BUSINESS: The Commodore was asked if the club will host another 'fun regatta' this summer.  He responded that we will and it will probably be held sometime in June or July.  Gene mentioned that last year's race was phenomenal with the number of boats participating with an after race party that was great.  Butch Beard will once again come up with the regulations and course for this year's race (Butch, should it be called the annual Rocky Raccoon Regatta?)

The 50/50 drawing was held with Butch Beard winning $34.

A motion was made, seconded and unanimously approved to adjourn the meeting.
