From the Commodore:

Welcome to the AISC 2005!  I hope that everyone had a wonderful Christmas celebration and wish you all a happy, healthy and prosperous 2005.  This coming year will see many fun and new initiatives for our club.  With the increase in dues, we will be able to meet all our annual obligations and look towards some new sailing programs.  In 2005, we hope to have a Blessing of the Fleet, where we will welcome all boaters in the area to join us for this occasion and perhaps encourage some individuals to join our club.  Community Hospice of Northeast Florida has expresses an interest in working with us to host a 'day on the bay' for children and young adults going through their bereavement camp.  These are just two of the topics that will be discussed at February's meeting.  I welcome ideas and comments from all members.  Drop a line via e-mail or give me a call.  This is your club and your input to its operations and success matters, so become proactive, let me know what you are thinking.  I look forward to seeing everyone at our first meeting of this new year, on February 1st.

I am truly honored to be chosen as your Vice Commodore in 2005.  I moved from Orlando to Nassau County in 1992.  In 1997 I was invited to be crew on a 25 ft. J-Boat in the "Mug Cup" race from Palatka.  That was my very first time to step aboard a "rag boat".  Yes, I was a died-in-the-wool "stink pot" boater!  It almost hurts now to admit it.  While sailing to Palatka, I was actually able to talk with my fellow crew members (no motor noise), while sailing under a full moon.  The trip to Palatka and the race were so enjoyable, that I was hooked.    In 1998, I sold my power boat and signed up for sailing lessons at Windward Sailing School.  In 1999, Charlie Steinkamp and I, co-purchased the "Mary Wanda-er" (Hunter 34) and my sailing days began.  We joined the AISC and the rest is history.  Many of our members have coached me along the way and I am indebted to them all.  Most of all, they have become good friends.  I still consider myself as a novice sailor and each sail a learning experience.  I look forward to serving as Vice Commodore for our new Commodore, Hanko.  Our new Commodore is an experienced Commodore and ocean racer.  Her past experience will serve us well and I look forward to learning from such an accomplished sailor as well as working with all our members to make 2005 a very special AISC year.  If I can be of assistance, please contact me at 277-3499 or rogwan@att.net.

Give me a spirit that on this life's rough sea
Loves t'have his sails fill'd with a lusty wind,
even till his sail-yards tremble, his masts crack,
and his rapt ship run on her side so low
that she drinks water, and her keel plows the air.

George Chapman, English Playwright, 1608.
