From the Commodore

It is hard for me to believe the year 2006 is here.  The 2005 Christmas party was another success.  I want to thank our past Commodore, Hanko Rosenblad, and her officers, for their leadership in making 2005 another memorable year.  Hanko, your leadership has been an inspiration to us all and broadened our horizons.  We are now ready to kick off the Amelia Island Sailing Club’s 2006 season with our next meeting on February 7th.  I look forward to seeing all of you there!

Your new officers and committee chairs met in January to plan out another fun filled year for our club.  We are blessed with an enthusiastic group of leaders who want to ensure our club is successful in all areas.  Please help me welcome the following officers and committee chairs:

Vice Commodore – John Burns

Rear Commodore – Joe Blanchard

Treasurer – Lin Bass

Race Committee – Scott Inglis

Program Committee – Hanko Rosenblad

Membership Committee – Bill Bass

Landside Committee – Tanya Christensen (monthly meetings)

Landside Committee – Barbara Sokolowski (parties)

Mooring Committee – Peter Zachary

Cruise Committee – Butch Beard

I want to encourage all members to get involved in your club’s activities.  Our meetings are kicked off with a social hour and potluck dinner, thanks to our landside committee.  Our race season is always a fun time of friendly competition and fellowship due to the diligence of your race committee.  Your cruise committee is planning a year filled with “special” events that everyone will want to participate in.  Special programs are being planned by your program committee that are approximately 20 min. in duration and interesting.  Your mooring committee is looking into moorings with the City of Fernandina Beach.  Your membership committee is working on updating our membership list and enlisting new members.  Your flag officers are diligently working to make 2006 another year of great sailing and fellowship on the water and landside.

Please remember to check the Amelia Island Sailing Club’s web site at ameliaislandsailing.org.  There you will find information on the club’s activities, items for sale, the club’s calendar, member’s forum, and more.  Let’s thank our Rear Commodore, Joe Blanchard, for all the work he does to keep us informed.

“The Ship’s Store” will be available, after every meeting, to order or purchase the Club items you desire.  I hope every vessel owner is flying our AISC burgee.  Please come prepared to pay your annual dues for the 2006 season.

Your Vice Commodore, John Burns, will assist me in ensuring the Amelia Island Sailing Club has another fun filled year on the water and landside.  I can’t wait to find out what special event he has planned for us this summer.

I am heading up a trip to the Abaco Bahama Islands, in May, sponsored by the Amelia Island Sailing Club.  We will be leaving West Palm Beach on or around the 20th of May and returning to Fernandina Beach by the 16th of June.  Anyone interested in making the trip, please contact me.  We presently have four vessels making the trip.

As you can tell, the 2006 sailing season has many activities planned for your pleasure and to promote sailing in our area.  I hope to see all of you at our next meeting on February 7th.  Please come at 6:30 p.m., enjoy happy hour, and bring your favorite dish to make our potluck dinner a success.  The business meeting starts at 7:30 p.m.  Come, share your experiences, promote sailing, and be a part of making the Amelia Island Sailing Club a success.

May The Wind Always Fill Your Sails,

Roger

Vice Commodore's Report,

Well the new sailing season has started. Gale and I ended the year with a December 31st sail out to the first tower. Unfortunately because of tides and weather we were not able to begin the year with a January 1st sail, but we have been out every weekend since and have had some great sailing. Even got to photograph the elusive Right Whale.

I attended the Commodore's planning meeting last night and had the opportunity to participate in the 2006 activity calendar. Heck, we have so much planned this year I might have to retire just to have the time to participate in all the activities. There should be no reason why everyone can't find an activity to suit them. I will not discuss in my column all the planned events because I am certain the committee chairs will update you in their reports.

One of my tasks as Vice Commodore is to plan the Poker Run, which as all of you know was a great success last year. My target date for this event is July 15th. Mast Confusion will be the committee boat and all members, whether you sail, power, or row, are encouraged to participate. The Poker Run will be followed by a picnic at the Amelia Island Yacht Basin.

Another activity I am looking at arranging is a tour of the White Oaks Plantation. Although a non-water event it is an opportunity to get together and tour a facility that I understand will offer us an outstanding experience. I hope to have this scheduled by our February meeting.

All in all, I think this year will offer a lot of opportunities for us to enjoy each others company, and have some fun. I encourage everyone, including our non-boat owners to come and participate........ And don't forget dues are due.

See you on the water.

John
