Well, the June 1st Meeting is Upon Us. Where did January and February go, along with March thru May??? The Racing Season is in Full Swing and another 1st for the Club will be the Summer Series of Races. This will include 4-5 races from late May thru the End of July with a different twist. I will let Joe Bowen and Butch Beard go into the details at the June Meeting. The Cruising Season is about to go Big Time, with 13 -15 boats getting together at Jekyll Harbor Marina for the Memorial Day Week End.  I believe most of us are waiting anxiously for the July Race to Bermuda and Back, which according to Butch will have some Minor Changes to His Rules from Last Year. Can't Wait!!!  Getting closer to seeing our 1st AISC Handbook being published in 5 Years. We have Money in the Bank (Not Nearly Enough) and our before Meeting Dinners just keep on getting Better.  The Speakers at the Meetings have been Interesting & Enlightening. Our need to Support and Use our Web Site must be one of the challenges we all need to address in the Upcoming Months.  Everyone have a Great Summer & we'll see you all back at the August Meeting.

I would like to thank 'Larry'  Lindsey Leckie for being such a good sport about my renaming him in last month's minutes!  Our summer will officially begin this coming weekend and it sounds like all the cruisers will have a great time at Jekyll Island cruise.....enjoy.  Thanks to everyone who has helped fill the club's coffers by purchasing 50/50 tickets.  The extra financial padding helps and will enable the club to host additional fun events for our membership.  Remember that we will have our 'dogs and burgers' for June's meeting.  Bring your favorite salad, appetizer or desert and we will supply the rest.

See you all at our next meeting.

Greetings from the Acorn Flag,

We currently have $1839.93 in the club treasury. There was $228.17 in expenditures and $273.12 in deposits, so far this month (May). The good turnout at the races and the 50/50 are definitely a boost to the treasury, and we appreciate everyone's support.

Please let me know, if you have any questions.

Fair winds to all,

It's June, and time for some Summer Series racing.  The first race of the Summer Series was Saturday, May 22.  We had an extremely light turnout due to no lead time announcements.  However, there will be 2 Summer Series races in June.  They will be held on the 12th and 26th.  Boats that have won a flag in the "normal" races aren't eligible to place in the summer series, but are encouraged to participate.  The more the merrier!  Bragging rights are always at stake!  There will be more details at the June meeting.  See you there!

Fellow sailors and boaters, our speaker for the month of June is our own Scott Inglis.  Scott will be speaking to us about taking care of our bottoms.  Boat bottoms that is!!!  Scott has a lot of knowledge in this area and I personally look forward to learning from him.  I trust I will see all of you at the June meeting and let's give Scott a special welcome as he comes to share his knowledge with us.

Our June 2 club meeting's Bill of Fare will be hot dogs and hamburgers billed to and provided by AISC.  How we fare will depend on the wonderfully delicious covered/side dishes customarily brought to the meeting by our members.  Bring your favorite dish to this meeting for culinary enjoyment; if you can't or don't wish to do so, bring yourself for the enjoyment of fellowship--we always have plenty of food.  See you at the meeting and on the water this coming weekend.

AMELIA ISLAND SAILING CLUB
May 4, 2004

MINUTES

The meeting was called to order by the Commodore at 8:00 p.m.  All present had just finished feasting on a Cinco de Mayo buffet that was of exceptional quality.

INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS: Scott and Ann Bird were introduced and Walter Donnelly was introduced to the membership.  Scott and Ann Tayana 42, which is presently berthed at Marsh Harbor in the Bahamas, spent a long time in the Chesapeake.  Walter is new to Amelia Island.  He is semi retired and relocated from Minnesota.  He has a Pacific Seacraft and stated that he started sailing when he was 17 in the Chesapeake.  This is his 'first adventure in salt water'.  Welcome to all.

GUEST SPEAKER: Bill Kavanaugh, Sr. Pilot for the Port of Fernandina Beach and owner of the Tiger Point Marina was the guest speaker for the night.  Bill began his career in 1974 as a pilot trainee.  He enlightened and entertained all members with stories about workings of the harbor with his best advice to those of us who are small boat sailors being, very simply, "stay out of the way" of the commercial vessels.  He provided members with useful rules of the road information.  Our membership asked a variety of pointed questions concerning the upcoming G8 Summit meeting at Sea Island Plantation and how to deal with traffic from Kings Bay.  Thanks Bill, for a truly edifying presentation.

MINUTES OF PRIOR MEETING: The minutes of March's meeting were accepted after correction of Lindsey Leckie's name.

VICE COMMODORE: Hanko informed the membership about the arrival of participants in the Tybee 500 race.  This race is for catamarans and starts in So. Florida, ending at Tybee Island Georgia.  The club was invited down to Sliders to help welcome the competitors who were scheduled to arrive in the afternoon of May 14th.

REAR COMMODORE: Joe asked that anyone wishing to receive copies of the Scuttlebutt on line should get their e-mail address to him.  He also suggested that members wishing to sell items and include a photo of their item to insure that the photo are web ready and legible.  Anyone with questions can contact Joe directly.

A question was received from the membership regarding publication of an updated roster.  The Commodore replied that we will be issuing an updated roster and year book later this year.

TREASURER: Lin announced that there is currently $1,794.88 in the club account.  The 50/50 drawing has helped to build up our treasury.

CRUISE COMMITTEE: Butch discussed the Memorial Day cruise and suggested that if you signed up for the cruise and had not yet called Sean with a credit card number, do so immediately.  He then proceeded to go over the agenda for this holiday cruise, including the route the cruise will take and entertainment planned for the weekend.  It sounds like a busy schedule for all cruisers.  Butch also asked the members to let him know if you are having trouble securing reservation for upcoming cruises at the designated marinas.  If so, he will follow-up with the people he has been dealing with at these venues.  He will also distribute a schedule of all events to everyone who has signed up for the Memorial Day cruise.

RACE COMMITTEE: Bob had several issues to discuss.  Joe Bowen was not present at this meeting.  Bob went over the plans for the upcoming race on Saturday, May 15th, giving the time and venue of the pre-race meeting.  He also talked about the Nassau Sound race, which he covered in an article in the current issue of the Scuttlebutt.  The Nassau Sound Regatta will be sponsored by Kevin of the Amelia Island Yacht Basin.  He covered the information on the Gold Cup Race and asked for a committee boat for this event.

LANDSIDE COMMITTEE: Linda commented that our membership once again provided a great meal tonight.  She talked about a club sponsored Low Country Boil as an addition to the Valentine's Day and Christmas party.  It is a nice idea but would be too expensive to do a full lobster Boil.  A member suggested hot dogs and hamburgers as a possible alternative and the full membership voted to follow through with this idea for June's meeting.  The club would provide the meat, rolls and condiments and the members would bring salads, appetizers and deserts.

PROGRAM COMMITTEE:  Roger has lined up 'our own' Scott Inglis for June's meeting and he will talk about hull inspection, cleaning and other related topics.

BUSINESS/OPEN ISSUES: The 'in club' cooks were once commended for their outstanding presentation of Mexican delights for tonight's buffet.  George Chester asked the membership if anyone could recommend a marina where he could haul his catamaran.  At present he can find only one option and that is in St. Augustine.  The other possible option being sailing the boat up to Savannah.  He received a few suggestions from the membership.

The 50/50 drawing was held, yielding $43.00 to the lucky winner Billy Trahan.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:00 p.m.
