From The Commodore

I would like to thank everyone who signed up for both the Blessing of the Fleet and Day on the Bay.  We have enough signatures for both events to go forward with each.  If anyone knows of a minister who would like to do the blessing, please let me know.  I anticipate that the entire blessing will take about one hour, with the reception afterwards open to all members and participants.  There will be a sign up sheet at our next meeting for the reception.  Our Hospice initiative, Day on the Bay, will not take place until later in the year, or perhaps even next year.  I am still awaiting word from CHNF regarding the liability issue and how they plan to handle it.  Summer is almost here, with Memorial Day looming in less than a week.  I wish everyone a pleasant Memorial Day.  Be safe and have fun.  Now let's see what our gentlemen cooks have planned for us this coming meeting!

Cruising season has swung into full gear. Memorial day cruise is this weekend and the second annual “Great Dinghy Challenge”. July 4th is looking a little iffy this year, everyone is talking about being out of town. Oh well. Labor day planned for St Augustine again if we don’t get cancelled for storms. More later.

Reminder: June meeting is men’s night. So all you men get your wives and girlfriends to make something that you can claim and bring it to the meeting. Otherwise you men may have to stir up something. You know we could just have beer and pizza. Naw, let’s surprise them and show everyone what great cooks we are. John Burns and Bill Bass are our grill experts so contact them with all questions.

Around the Sound Regatta

The Amelia Island Yacht Basin sponsored the Amelia Island Sailing Clubs’ annual Around The Sound Regatta on May 14th.   Seven boats entered the race with the goal of covering as much of the Cumberland Sound as the day’s wind and tides would allow.  The Regatta started in the channel by Ft. Clinch, criss-crossing the Sound up to Kings Bay and back. After a challenging down wind and down current start, accompanied by a few screams and curses, the crews sailed in variable winds up to the Sub Base and then upwind back to the finish.  The finish line, between the ‘spider’ tower and ‘R’ 2, proved as tough as the start line to cross because of the now incoming tide. Also memorable this year was the Cheese Boat, Skimmer and Vested Virgin rounding of the northernmost mark,  referred to later as the “Fubar at ‘G’43”.
