WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Great first Meeting!!!!!!!!!!!!! Linda thanks again for orchestrating the "Pot Luck" and thanks to all who brought all that wonderful food, Just Great.  Also, looking forward to the March 2nd, "Irish Night" for the corned beef and cabbage. So many things to do this year, I only hope we have enough time to do everything our Committee Chairs have planned. The first race of the year is coming up on the 28th of Feb. I know there will be a few skippers of boats that will need crew, so come on down.  Some of you have not sent in your checks for the club dues, as of yet. Please make sure that when you do, you complete the form, sign it and send it to either Susan Bowen or Lin Bass.  In another month, we will begin our Cruising Schedule, so everyone get your boats and dinghy's ship-shape so we can enjoy this year’s festivities.

See You on the Seas

The AISC is off and running strong for 2004.  Congratulations to our membership for a great meeting on February 3rd.  Your attendance and participation make our meetings the spirited events that they are!  I'm beginning to think that the best food on Amelia Island can be found every first Tuesday of the month at the Kraft Club, hosted by the AICS.  Thanks to everyone who brought a dish to the meeting.  Our March meeting will celebrate St. Pat's day with a menu of Irish delicacies.  I can just imagine the delicious selection we will sample on March 2nd.  We began our 50/50 raffle in February to help raise funds for our coffers.  Tickets were sold for $1.00 each or $5.00 for an arm length, now that's a bargain.  We split the 'pot' with $45.00 being added to our account and $45.00 going to the winner.  The 50/50 will continue each month and we hope that you will all continue to participate.  As I receive updated information on the Jacksonville Tall Ship festival, I will pass it on to the membership.  I am surprised by the lack of publicity in our local news papers for the festival, it seems that our club is better informed about this event that most people in the Jacksonville area.  Come on out to our March meeting, you will not only be supporting your club, but also sampling great food!

Greetings from the cruise guy, a couple of quick notes. The first cruise will be the 27th of March instead of the 20th. The calendar has been changed to reflect the date change. I need some help from folks that plan to cruise to Beaufort, SC and Charleston, SC. We need to do a lot of planning and I have not made either of those trips.  Please contact me if you can help. A lot of folks have not sent back their spreadsheets indicating their intentions for the year. Please take a minute and let me know which cruises that you plan to participate or I will bug you to death, sink your ship, steal your women, and otherwise make a nuisance of myself.

Butch

Our speaker for the month of March is Mike Owsley, Commander of our local United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, Flotilla 14-1.  Commander Owsley will be telling us about the mission of Flotilla 14-1 and how they can assist us. Our sailing club has several active USCG Aux. members and Mike will explain what is expected of them and how you, too, can join if you are interested. I look forward to seeing all of you at our March meeting.

AMELIA ISLAND SAILING CLUB
FEBRUARY 3, 2004

MINUTES

The Commodore called the meeting to order at 19:55 hrs.  The Minutes of the November meeting were presented and accepted.

COMMODORE'S REPORT: The Commodore's stated that he expects 2004 to be an exciting year.  We have great committees working on all aspects of club activities.  Each member was asked to submit a new application for membership, updating all personal information.  This is important to insure that our membership roster is correct and up to date.

The membership was asked to consider a new marina in Jacksonville for per Super Bowl moorings and activities.  The marina is at the Beckman Plaza with is off the St. John's River.  Additional copies of the Scuttlebutt were made available to the members who did not get a chance to read their copy via e-mail.

INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS: New Members and guests were introduced and welcomed.  Introduced were:  Ted Holmes, who stated that he had, "a mast and boom"; Richard Washington, PC of the Richland YC who recently moved into the area, Richard has a 34 ft CHB; Thom Mason and Cammy Lou Pelham, new members who have found their dream boat, a Morgan 27 named 'Baby Blues' and Adam Bryant, who has a Catalina 22 named 'Day Dreamer', sail #7726, Adam lives in Yulee and is interested in "doing some good sailing".

GUEST SPEAKER: There was not guest speaker this meeting.

VICE COMMODORE: Spoke about the upcoming Tall Ship's festival in Jacksonville.  Applications for a berth on the ship POGORIA were made available for interested club members.  A presentation of the traditional three silver stars designating IPC (Immediate Past Commodore) rank on a significant article of clothing was presented to IPC Butch Beard.

REAR COMMODORE: Suggested that if a member did not receive the past copy of Scuttlebutt via e-mail, it's because we do not have your e-mail address.  Visit the club's web site at www.ameliaislandsailing.org.  A discussion of recent web site polls and voting in these polls followed.  The RC informed the club that he would be going into the hospital for surgery in another couple of weeks for a back operation.

TREASURER: Annual membership dues for 2004 are presently due.  Member's immediate attention to sending in their dues would be appreciated.  Tickets for the Valentine's Day party are $30/person and reservations were due on 2/3.  All members were reminded to send in their updated applications.  The club needs this information for insurance purposes.

Our 50/50 drawing for tonight will net the winner $45, with $45 going to the club.

If members have any questions for the Treasurer, please feel free to e-mail Lin Bass.

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE: Welcome to new members and our guests for the evening.  Burgees are currently on sale for $25.00.  Tomorrow the price of the burgees will increase to $35.00.  A new member will get a discounted rate on their burgee and can purchase one for $25.00.  We will be regenerating our club's Year Book in 2004.  Photos of all members and their boats will be included in this publication.  We will begin taking photos of members at the Valentine's Day Party on 2/13.

PROGRAM COMMITTEE: Presentations are being scheduled for future meeting and will include guest speakers such as Commander of the Coast Guard Auxiliary and Jim Mayo of Baptist Medical Center who will talk on first aid at sea.

A significant presentation was made by IPC Butch Beard to Commodore Gene and Roger Henderson to recognize their 'bravery in the face of furry four legged adversity'.  The membership was regaled with the 'truth' behind the speculation and hearsay of the 'Coon On Board Story'.  As an added touch of elegance, the IPC crowned Commodore Gene and Roger with coon skin caps, which they proudly wore for the balance of the meeting!

LANDSIDE COMMITTEE: The membership was canvassed to determine who was planning to attend the Valentine's Day party.  Consensus was for a 6:30 p.m. cocktail hour and the menu was highlighted.  We will have a buffet prior to each monthly meeting.  March will be our St. Patrick's Day theme and we will have a Mexican theme in May for Cinco de Mayo.  If you have any suggestions for a specific theme, let Linda know.

CRUISE COMMITTEE: Cruise schedules were handed out and the membership was asked to respond as to which cruise they anticipated participating in.  Twenty-nine members viewed the cruising poll on the web and only three voted.  There was also a poll on line concerning racing participation.  Martha and Butch have opened a 'ships store' and will provide the club members with the chance to purchase lovely embroidered items.  If you are interested in purchasing a specific item (mugs, hats, shirts, etc), please see either Martha or Butch.

RACE COMMITTEE: Visit the club's web site for racing information.  Ted will be looking for our new and current power members to act as committee boat for our races.  The rain date for our Saturday races will be on Sunday.  Bob Canon spoke in detail on a number of races being held by the First Coast Sailing Group.  We expect good participation from our club on race days.

NEW BUSINESS: George Chester announced to the club that the Rotary would be sponsoring a Gala Scholarship Ball on February 6th at the Ritz Carlton to raise funds scholarships presented to students of FBHS.  Tickets are $100/each.

Lisa Engles spoke about very nice tide clocks that she saw at the Atlanta Merchandise Mart, brochures were available for anyone who was interested.

Meeting was adjourned at 21:20 hrs.
