From the Commodore:

Our new year started out on a very positive note.  February's meeting was well attended and it seems that our pre-meeting buffets are becoming the best food on the Island!  As we enter our new year, club finances are traditionally tight.  We have two events that the club is subsidizing, our annual Valentine's Day party at Northhampton and March's buffet, which will be an oyster roast with the club providing the oysters.  I would ask each member who has not yet sent in your annual dues to please do so.  We have a lot of fun events planned for the coming year and look forward to seeing you all at as many as you can attend.  The monthly 50/50 continues to add to our coffers, so here's a bit thank you to all who purchase tickets at the meetings.  It seems that our club racing rivalries have started up again with our first race on February 19th, may the best boat win the series.  See you in March.

Cruising News

I am working on the Charleston Cruise scheduled for the end of March and a couple of days in April. Not a lot of boats scheduled to go but I will be out there leading the charge. St Augustine is booked for Memorial Day again. Blue Water Fishing tournament so I have gone to plan B. Jekyll Harbor Marina. I have secured dockage for those who committed at the Feb meeting and that is about all the space they have. If you are interested in that cruise please let me know. Work continues on the other cruises.

The annual running of the Ice Bucket Regatta was held on the crisp cool morning of Feb.19th. The winds defied the light forecast and held steady but spotty at about 10kts from the N. and NE. With the tide ebbing at the start and flowing at the finish, we had the rare opportunity the place both the start and the finish lines off the downtown marina!  The start was tough in the light winds with Nightflyer first across the line followed closely by Cheese Boat and Skimmer. The first mark was R-18 near the end of the jetties, which lead to a long tactical challenge around the fort and down the channel. First boat around the mark was Skimmer by a good margin.  Second around was Valhalla (with 2 LL's) who had laid back at the start and made up a lot of time!! The downtown finish worked out well with the tide running and the wind from astern. Skimmer blew across first covering the 10 mile course in 2hr. 32 min.  Nightflyer was next at 2hr 49min. with Valhalla close behind at 2hr 52min. Baby Blooz and CheeseBoat crossed next with Blooz only 10 seconds ahead!! The two raced most of the final leg with only a boat lengths or less separation!! Final Standings after PHRF adjustments, (in seconds)  Skimmer 8336, CheeseBoat 8525, Night Flyer 8560,Valhalla 8768, Baby Blooz 8777, Mast Confusion 9789, Vested Virgin 4hr 6min. Special Thanks to Scott and Lisa who skippered the committee boat Borrowed Time and furnished the start and finish sounds with what sounded like a hand held cannon. Next Race will be the O'Kanes sponsored St. Patricks Day 'Green Bush' Regatta on March 19th.
