Captain’s
log stardate Feb 2003. Opps wrong life. Commodore’s corner for Feb. What a
great start to the year. I think 2003 will be a year that we all remember and
enjoy. Our first meeting had a record turnout. A lot of new folks interested in
sailing and socializing. That’s good too because we missed some of the old
faces. I hope they don’t drift off and forget what a great time we can have.
Attendance
at the irregularly scheduled Friday nite on the dock party has been a little
lite so far this year. I think it may be the freezing weather. I thought I
moved to FL. Anyone looking to talk a little sailing and have an adult beverage
or two should come on down to the Yacht Basin.
And
what a great party to start the year. Thanks a million Linda. By the way some
of you were not using enough ice in your drinks. We had 40 lbs left over. I
think we may need to make that sort of thing a regular. The great party, not
the left over ice. Lots of folks commented on how much fun it would be to have
something like that 3 or 4 times a year. John really looks good all dressed up.
It took quite a detective effort to determine the winner of the door prize. I
wonder if anyone has ever given a door for the door prize.
Finally
note, Mar and I had an America’s Cup party last night at the Surf. We put the
race on the big screen and enjoyed a beer or two. I got some pointers and think
that it will probably give me an unfair advantage in the race Sat. All of you
have now been warned, even if it is after the fact.
Fair
winds or strong dock lines.

There
will be no speaker for the March meeting due to planned potluck dinner and a
plethora/cacophony of business items. Program planning and
the making of arrangements is proceeding The following is a
recapitulation of ideas and status.
1. Sails and Bedding: (I realize this is a strange
combination but business is business). April 1 Meeting.
For those of you that do not know,
Jake Hunter (no relation to Hunter Marine) sold Winddancer Sails to Ms. Vici
Corbett. Vici owns a bedding business and makes custom springs and
mattresses and sheets, spreads, etc., for Hunter Marine and other Yacht
Fabricators. Vici is now also in the Sail Loft Business and is currently
to be our guest speaker at the April meeting. Several of us have
purchased sails from Winddancer Sails and they are highly recommended by
Whitney Marine.
2. Celestial Navigation:
I personally
believe the discussion of GHA, declination, and The Undivided Astronomical
Triangle solutions by spherical trigonometry should not be topics of the AISC
monthly meeting. Accordingly I am in discussions with Charley Weaver to
set up a school for those of you that think that in the event of loss of GPS
this might be a useful tool. There will be tuition, cost of books
etc. Please advise by email (steiny1642@aol.com) if you are interested,
and times that you could best attend and not attend. Charley is thinking
about a new two day weekend curriculum with perhaps a follow up day.
3. Compass -
Before we had Loran and GPS, along
with waypoints and CDI we used a compass. I have been in touch with
Island Compass in Orange Park and Steve Colt has agreed to make a presentation.
I personally think learning how to adjust a compass and the subject of the
magnetic compass is both interesting and useful. There are people who
think that it is an outmoded tool along with my sliderule that I keep above my
computer in a glass case for emergencies. Again I would be interested in
feedback of the number of members interested in a presentation on the compass.
4. Rules of the Road June 3 meeting.
Charley Weaver has agreed to make a presentation on "Rules of the
Road." Charley taught navigation and seamanship among other topics
for the US Navy.
5. Rules of Racing:
I am looking for a subject matter
expert on this subject as there have been some important changes in the last 10
years that some of us (Me!) have not kept current. Any
volunteers??? Does any one have any suggestions?
6. Safety:
There is an article on
"NOYC.org" webpage about 2 Overboard at the J-30 winter
nationals. This happened while in the entrance to the New Orleans City
marina. It is recommended reading. I am contacting the
US Coastguard AUX for a safety subject matter expert and will keep you advised.
7. Fishing - Don Whitman "The Rod and Reel
Doctor" of Leaders and Sinkers - May 6 Meeting.
Dragging an artificial lure while
sailing at the right time and place can be productive. Until one has
tried to battle a 15 pound kingfish, while tacking to dodge another boat they
cannot really say they have given the fish an even chance. There
are local reefs, "FA," "FB," etc., that provide both sport
and bottom fishing that are within daysail distances. Don Whitman has
agreed to make a presentation and I believe this presentation should be in
May because of timeliness of the upcoming kingfish season.
There are many good topics not mentioned above and your recommendations are
solicited.
Fair winds and following seas,
Land Cruisin’
