Every Meeting we seem to have More Fun, More Great Food and More Great People Joining the Club.  In the past week or so I have met, 2 more people who say they are going to be at the May Meeting and Join the AISC. Well, I guess we will just have to have the People at the Kraft Club put an addition onto the building so we will be ready for next years membership.

The Great Nassau Sound Buoy Race was held on April 17th and Sponsored by the Amelia Island Yacht Basin. This was the largest turnout (13 Boats) we have had for a good many years.  Thanks! "Special Thanks to Kevin and Carol for the use of the Abaco House and the PIZZA". It's amazing how hungry you can get being out on the water for 7-8 Hours.  The results are in and the boats are already flying THE FLAGS. 1st Place went to the Cheese Boat, 2nd went to Baby Blooz and 3rd went to Mary Wanda'er.  It appears that the month of May will be a busy one as well with 2 races and a few cruises scheduled.  Again, all of this would not be possible without the support of our committee chair people and the participation of the Club.

See You on the Seas

Axel and I recently returned from our 'passage to India' and FranceIndia is always an experience and I'm sure that Bob Canon would concur.  On April 28th, Commodore Gene and I met with Vicki Vojtech of the Amelia Island Chamber of Commerce.  On May 14th, a fleet of catamarans participating in the Tybee 500 race from the Key's to Tybee Island, GA, will converge on Amelia Island.  Sliders, off of Sadler will be one of the beachfront checkpoints in the race and the sailors will spend the night, then begin their last leg to Georgia on Saturday morning.  The AISC has been asked to participate in welcoming the racers.  I will have more information about this event and how we can help out, at our May meeting.  The minutes have been generated from the tape recording that Lin Bass was kind enough to make for me!  I apologize for any misspellings of names or other inaccuracies.

See you all at our next meeting.

Our next race is May 8th, the Around the Sound race.  The captain's meeting will be at the AIYB old dock house at 8:30am.  High tide is 12:40 ish, so we will start the race sometime between 10am to 11:30am.  Of course, we expect great weather and lots of boats trying to seize one of the flags!  Also, don't forget the May 15th race with the Golden Isles club from Fernandina to St. Simons Island.  Get your reservations now!  I'll be out of town for the May club meeting, so I'll see you on the morning of race day, May 8th.

See you there!

NASSAU SOUND REGATTA

The  Club recently competed the first race of it’s three race off shore series.

Thirteen boats sailed in the Nassau Sound Race sponsored by the Amelia Island Yacht Basin. Usually scheduled in May, the race was moved up to April this year because of light wind conditions encountered for the past few years.  As is often the case, the attempt to outwit Mother Nature proved to be in vain as the race started again under calm conditions. After a couple of slow hours, and just as some skippers and the race committee were starting to give up hope,  the wind start to gradually build and continued to do so throughout the race.   Green Slip, Kalen, Mary Wanda’er and Cheese Boat were first across the start line and Cheese boat with their spinnaker soon pulled ahead of the fleet. Kalen was near the lead, but had to withdraw due to a prior commitment.  Butch with ‘Spinnaker Bill’ Peterson and crew on Cheese Boat finished first with seven other boats all crossing the line within 15 minutes of the leader!!  Second place went to Tom Mason and crew on Baby Blooze, and third went to Roger Henderson and crew on Mary Wanda’er.  The club wishes to thank the Amelia Island Yacht Basin for their support of the race along with Joe and Susan Bowen and Vested Virgin for serving as committee boat. Kevin at The Yacht Basin has agreed to sponsor the race on an annual basis.  A perpetual trophy will be purchased and displayed at the dock house. He also agreed to sponsor the next regatta, the Around the Sound race on May 8th!!!!.  The après’ race soiree at the gazebo witnessed the devouring of thirteen large pizzas, one for each boat entered!!

We are looking forward to the annual race to St. Simons Island on May 15th, held each year in conjunction with the Golden Isles Sailing Club.  The skipper’s meeting will be at O’Kanes at 7:00, Friday the 14th. We are need of a volunteer to be the committee boat for the start on the 15th.  They furnish the committee boat for our St. Simons race in October.

Final finish times before corrections show reflect the close finish:

Cheese Boat:  4hr. 25 min. 39 sec.

Sunday Mornin’ Jazz 4:26.51

Mary Wanda’er  4:27.05

Baby Blooze  4:34:39

Night Flyer  4:39:23

God’s Gift  4:43:06

Green Slip  4:47:08

Thanks to all who participated.

Bob

Fellow sailors and boaters, our speaker for May is Bill Cavanaugh.  Bill is a St. Mary's River harbor pilot based in the City of Fernandina Beach and owner of Tiger Point Marina on north 14th Street.  You may have seen the harbor pilot boat docked at Tiger Point.  Bill will share with us the responsibilities of a harbor pilot and explain the "Law of Tonnage" to anyone who has not figured it out.  Bill too is a fellow sailor.  It has been my pleasure to hear Bill speak to the U.S.C.G. Auxiliary.  I look forward to seeing all of you at the May meeting and let's give Bill a warm welcome!

AMELIA ISLAND SAILING CLUB
April 6, 2004

MINUTES

The meeting was called to order by the Commodore after everyone had feasted on a wonderful array of hors d'oeuvres.

INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS:

Frank and Ginger introduced Tom Wesori, who is new to the Island and 'crazy about sailing.'  Tom told the group that he retired at 40 and has had a home on the Island for about 11 years.  He moved her full time this past June.  Tom as sailed extensively for the past 25+ years in the Chesapeake and mid-Atlantic.  He has not owned his own boat since '92 but has done a lot of sailing aboard chartered American Cup boats.

Lindsay Leckie introduced Mickey Martin, who has crewed with Lindsay and Linda.  Mickey stated that he was very happy to be here and has sailed Buzzards Bay in New England in the past.  He grew up in Coral Gables, Florida and presently has a Saber 28 that he would like to sell and 'buy up.'  Welcome to you both.

GUEST SPEAKER:

Roger Henderson introduced Jim Mayo to the group.  Jim, originally from Alabama, came to Fernandina Beach in 1994 as the Hospital Administrator for the then Baptist Medical Center.  He and his wife Nancy reside on the Island.

Roger gave a very informative presentation, including a slide show, about he was brought into the hospital on the Island and given the charter to 'turn it around.'  He stated that he found the staff to be wonderful professionals working under difficult conditions.  Roger then took the group through the upgrade and renovation program that has made Nassau Baptist Medical Center into the quality institution that it presently is.

Roger also stated that he welcomes the opportunity to come on board any members boat, so keep him in mind when you are looking for crew.

The Commodore thanked Roger for his presentation, citing that the AISC has, "sent you some business" over the years!

Upon completion of the presentation for the evening, the Commodore asked for a motion to approve the minutes from the February meeting.  A motion was made, seconded and the minutes were approved.

VICE COMMODORE:

Not present

REAR COMMODORE:

Joe Blanchard asked the membership for input about the web site.  He stated that if there are any complaints, just let him know.  We did have a virus hit in February and Joe explained where the problem originated from and what steps were made to correct it.  He also asks that you contact him if you want any announcement of item put in an issue of the Scuttlebutt.

TREASURER:

Lin Bass reported that at present, the club has approximately $1,400 in it's treasury.  Thanks to the new members who have gotten their checks to Lin.

PROGRAM COMMITTEE:

Roger Henderson announced that Captain Bill Kavanaugh will do next months presentation.  Bill is the Harbor Pilot for the Port of Fernandina Beach.

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE:

New members and guests were recognized by the Commodore at the start of the meeting.

RACE COMMITTEE:

Joe Bowen stated that we had a great race in March, with 10 boats turning out for the start.  He is looking for a bigger start for subsequent races.

Bob Canon went through the roster of upcoming races with announcements regarding dates of race and times of skippers meetings.  He stated that the April 17th Nassau Sound Race was changed from it's usual May date
