From The Commodore

A number of our members did very well in the two big regattas this past weekend.  Bob Canon will report on their successes at our upcoming meeting.  I heard that the conditions were challenging both during the races and on the return trips back to the Island.  Congratulations to all.

Community Hospice of NE Florida is very interested in working with us to hold a day on the bay for the young people in their bereavement camps.  I will be canvassing the membership at May's meeting to see who would like to participate in this venture.  If you can't attend the meeting, but would like to be part of this worthwhile program, give me a call or send an e-mail.  The time frame for the outing would possible be September, October (weather permitting) or early in 2006.

A sign up sheet for the Blessing of the Fleet event, which we are planning to hold on August 20th, will also be circulated at the upcoming meeting.  We hope to see good participation from our membership and possibly from other boaters on the Island.  Once again, if you would like to participate but will not be at the meeting, contact me or Roger Henderson to add your name to the roster.

I failed to mention last month that Joe and Joan Blanchard donated a sailboat to the AISC for use by the club.  Thank you for your generosity.  At present, the boat is stored in our yard but will be prepped and ready for the water shortly.  If anyone has an idea for permanent storage, let me know.  It would be nice to keep the boat at a local marina or close to a launch ramp.

Remember, this month's theme for our covered dish is Cinco de Mayo!  Look forward to seeing everyone at the meeting on May 3rd.

April has been a busy month.  There were several races for those who wished to participate.  Several of our members are having routine and/or major maintenance done to their boat.  I trust everyone is ready for warm weather and ready to get out on the water.  I was encouraged, during the cooler months, to see how many of our sailors were out on the water.  Your officers have been discussing some one day outings in which all can participate.  This will be discussed at the May meeting.  I, unfortunately, will have to miss the meeting due to being out of town.  I am headed to the Bahamas with a friend, so don't feel too badly for me.  I enjoy our meetings and fellowship every month and sincerely will miss all of you.  The vice commodore flag has been pronounced "missing" in the heat of competition.  I was crewing aboard Coy Mistress, in the Fernandina to St. Simons race, during small craft warning conditions.  When the race was finished, the club flag was unaccounted for, the crew was tired and wet, but a second place finish was in the bag for Coy Mistress.  Believe me when I tell you, "the flag disappeared in honor!"  I am sure you will hear all about April's races at the meeting.  I will look forward to seeing all of you in June.  Be sure and read the minutes from the April meeting.  If you see a mistake, keep it too yourself.  Just kidding!
