From the Commodore

Spring is definitely here with the strong winds and changeable weather.  The Offshore Challenge race sounds like it lived up to its name this year.  Several of our members participated and I look forward to the report at our May meeting.  Rumor has it that some of our sailors were not having fun offshore!  The last weekend in April is the FL-GA race with the St. Simon’s Island Sailing Club and a race report will also be available at our May meeting.

I regret missing our April meeting, but I was in Ft. Myers learning how to investigate bomb blasts.  I can definitely say it was a “blast”!  Ha!  Hopefully I will retire before I have to put the information to use in Nassau County.  I am currently preparing the Mary Wanda-er for her trip to the Abaco Bahamas.  We have a total of four vessels making the trip in mid May and returning to Fernandina Beach mid June.  Regretfully, I will miss the June meeting also, but our capable Vice Commodore will carry on.  I know this is going to cost me because John has told me he does not come cheap!

I am really looking forward to our May meeting and seeing all of you again.  I miss the fellowship and good food.  I can’t wait to find out what Tanya has in store for us and hear what everyone has been doing.  I trust most of you are getting in some great sailing.

Our Vice Commodore, John Burns, keeps sharing some of his ideas concerning his mid-summer events.  It really sounds like he has some fun times planned.  I will leave the details for John to share at the proper time.  You definitely want to stay tuned in.

I look forward to seeing all of you at our May meeting on May 2nd.  Please join us at 6:30 p.m. for potluck dinner and happy hour with the meeting to follow at 7:30 p.m.  Please continue to check our web site at www.ameliaislandsailing.org and notice the change Joe has made.

Fair Winds & Smooth Sailing,

Roger

Vice Commodore's Report

As may approaches, I have just looked over the events completed thus far this year and those scheduled for the remainder of the year. Clearly a lot of people are working hard, and there are still numerous opportunities for our members to participate and have fun.

Cruises, races, monthly meetings and Friday nite gatherings are being well attended. I think our committee chair persons are doing outstanding jobs.

Don't forget I will be running the Poker Run on the July 15th with a barbeque immediately following the event.

I will be asking for power boaters to sign up for the power boat race at the next meeting. Current planning is to hold the race in early August, assuming we get enough participants. As I have stated previously, this will not be a race of speed but a challenge of skill and cunning.

See you at the April meeting.

John
