From the Commodore

I would like to thank everyone who donated to the Katrina relief fund, via our 50/50 last month.  Based on comments from the contributors, all monies raised through the 50/50 will be given to Joe Bowen to donate at his company, which will realize a 100% match.  Peter Zachery called with an intriguing topic.  The harbor is lanning on putting in moorings and there might be the possibility for the club to join in on this venture.  This is a very relevant topic to many of us and will be given 'prime time' at October's meeting.  Hope to see one and all next Tuesday to share in a grand Oktoberfest celebration.

Fellow Sailors,

I recently returned from a week’s vacation in Maine.  Maine is surely sailing country as is evidenced by the fact the sailboats out number the powerboats.  I am looking forward to getting the Mary Wanda-er under sail now that I am home.  The temperature should be moderating soon which will make time on the water more comfortable.  Winds should be increasing this time of year and I hope to see you on the water with your sails full of air.  I look forward to our meetings because it is the only time that I get to see some of our club members.  The fellowship is always great and the meetings fun and informative.  Let’s all come to the October meeting and make our speaker feel welcome.  Our potluck dinner theme is “October Fest”, so bring a dish that you feel is appropriate.  All food is accepted!!!

Greetings Sailors,

We currently have $2600.00 in the treasury. At last the September meeting, we collected $335.00 for the Katrina Relief Fund. Joe Bowen is putting this money through his company, CitiBank, as they will match the gift to the Red Cross. Thank you to all who participated.

With the autumn weather here, maybe we’ll get some wind and cooler temps. I’m looking forward to seeing all of you at the October meeting.

September's regatta was scheduled for Saturday the 17th. The forecast called for light winds followed by heavy heat. A postponement was considered but during the skippers meeting, a bit of wind drifted though the marina so we took hope and headed out.  Five boats made the start line at the downtown marina: Cheese Boat, Nightflyer, Mary Wanda'er, Baby Blooz, and Mast Confusion.   The breeze we felt earlier had dissipated and we were left with a full moon outgoing tide at our sterns. Hoping the breeze would pipe back once we neared the sound, the boats all drifted with the current over the start, past the marina, past the Port, past the mill, around the corner, past the boat ramp, and out to the Fort before the towel was finally thrown in and a cancellation was called. I should have called it earlier but I was actually enjoying the surreal experience of the boats drifting, sails up, without steerage, sometimes spinning around 360 degrees in the tidal rifts.  I could not arrange a make up race and our next Regatta is scheduled for Oct. 15th, but I'm considering holding it the 8th instead.  We will discuss it at the meeting. The big race for October is the Fl/GA on the 22nd. I will distribute entry forms at the meeting, St. Simon's has been sent their forms and I have received some back from them already!  I'm ready to order the tee shirts so let me know your crew numbers ASAP if you please.
