Well,
the heat and the humidity is FINALLY starting to break and the start of our
great fall sailing and cruising season is upon us! Bob Canon is doing a fine job organizing our Club regattas and
we'll be having monthly races from now until December. PLUS, we need a good boat turn-out and lots
of volunteers for our upcoming FLORIDA - GEORGIA OCEAN CHALLENGE, scheduled for
OCTOBER 19th. Our partnership over the past few years with
the Golden Isles Sailing Club, up in St. Simons, has developed into a great
"home and away", Spring/Fall offshore racing series. Please contact Bob Canon ASAP to register
your boat for the race and/or ask how you can volunteer to assist with this
worthy Fall sailing event. Bob will be
giving us lots of details about the upcoming FL-GA Ocean Challenge at our next
AISC meeting, at the Kraft Athletic Center on Tuesday October 1st.
Happy hour starts at 6:30 pm, and the meeting starts at 7:30 pm, I
hope to see ya'll there!
Speaking
of volunteers, I'd like to thank Barbara Sokolowski for agreeing to chair this
year's AISC Christmas Dinner/Dance Committee.
Barb's committee has already been doing some early planning work for
this year's event, and I think ya'll will be really pleased to hear about the details at our October 1st
meeting. SO….MARK YOUR CALENDERS FOR FRIDAY, DECEMBER 6TH, for
another great AISC Christmas dinner/dance at the lovely Fernandina Beach Golf
Course Clubhouse.
Howard
and Amanda Layne have updated the AISC Sailing Club Roster with all our new
members, and the rosters (with e-mail addresses) will be available at the
monthly club meetings and/or we'll be glad to mail you one, just ask Isabel
Romero or myself. Thanks!
VICE COMMODORE:

Commodore Eric Hughes called the meeting to order at
approximately 1930.The minutes of the August
AISC monthly meeting were approved.
Our special guests were Ben and Karen Franklin, new

for the club.
Financial report: Tammy reviewed the
financial report as published in the newsletter.
Membership: Membership lists were made
available.

would be no program in Aug.

Linda was planning a cover dish for Oct. Mtg.
PHRF: No Report.
Old Business:

Lindsey
discussed issues with the dissolving of the Community Sailing club. It was
agreed that Jim Rogers could best answer the questions. We will ask Jim to fill
us in next time he attends a meeting.
New Business:
Eric
discussed the Christmas party and asked Barb to form a committee to oversee
preparations.
Meeting
adjourned.

This months' race, sponsored by
Smurfiit-Stone, was held on the 21st.
We
had a great turnout with nine boats
participating!! A past Race Committee
Chairman related to me recently that a
race to the "seven mile tower" would
be fun. On Saturday, the wind and
tides looked supportive so off we went.
The first leg was upwind which is fine
except this was seven miles upwind! A
full moon outgoing tide was soon
overridden by seas and swells kicked up by
East and Southeast winds to
17kts. It took a lot of tacking to get
clear of
the jetties and once the fleet was
offshore it became rather scattered.
Some
choose a long northward run and a
single tack back to the mark, while others
choose many shorter tacks, and others
somewhere in between. The best tactic
for the day is still under discussion
but one thing agreed on was that
everyone was glad to get around the
tower and start the downwind run for
home. The downwind leg turned out be
as equally challenging due to swells and
rogue seas from dead astern. Most boats had crew on the foredeck to
control
the whisker poles while sailing 'wing
to wing.' One boat reportingly had
someone sitting on their pole to hold
it steady. There were some reports of
seasickness but all in all it turned
out to be quite the challenge and a lot
of fun.
Congradulations to Sunday Morning Jazz for their first place
finish!! They
raced a solid race. Second was Nightflyer, eight minutes back.
The next four
boats crossed within five minuets of
each other with the honors for third
going to Midwatch!! Next was Cheeseboat followed by Mary
Wanda'er then
Gods'Gift, Greenslip, Jade and
Seahawk. This was the first race for
the
'fatcat' Seahawk, and although they
were a bit hampered by the rough upwind
conditions, I have a feeling we well
see a lot more of her in the future.
Next race will be October 5th (in the
Sound).
Also, entry forms are now available
for the Fl-Ga Ocean Challenge Race on
Oct. 19.
Reservations are required in advance
for St. Simons on the night of the 18th.
Please confirm participation as soon as possible.
Thanks.

this Seasons' race schedule will be:
