No sailing club would be complete without some type of race activity
The Amelia Island Sailing Club offers the sailboat owner the opportunity to compete in club racing. Since all members have different boats, we issue PHRF's based on The US Sailing Association guidelines. However, recognizing we are only club racers, and because the skills of our members are so varied, we use a golf score type handicapping system. After each race, PHRF's are adjusted based on finishing position. This system makes club racing more fun and gives everyone a chance to win. We sail eight club races yearly with awards presented at our December Christmas party
In addition, we also participate in two interclub races yearly with the Golden Isles Sailing Club. These two races, the 1st heading northbound from Amelia Island to St. Simons, and the 2nd southbound from St. Simons to Amelia Island. These interclub ocean races are always both challenging because of the varied weather and sea conditions, and fun because of the similar match up and camaraderie between the two clubs
Many members also participate in the First Coast Offshore Challenge (www.firstcoastoffshorechallenge.com) which is a series of three races held in April with multiple entries from many clubs
If fun and good spirited racing is your interest, you will enjoy these friendly events. |
